EARLY EDUCATION MATERIALS

Talking Letters Phonics Program Talking Letters: Here is a phonics program that has been used for a number of years. This is truly an interactive way to teach young children to associate a letter's sound with its shape. Each letter has a colorful character associated with it, and an adventure story that explains its shape and the appropriate sound. Once the sounds are learned, these children can begin to recognize the letters, and sound out words on their own. The system comes with a video tape, a poster of the letter pictures, flash cards with the story on the back for each letter and even a workbook. You can go to the website to see even more, but please come back and order it here!

Dolch Word Book 1Dolch Word Books by Betsy B. Lee
These books have poems, stories, and word search puzzles which use all of the appropriate grade level Dolch sight words. These words need to be recognized instantly without depending on pictures for cues. Many of the words can not be sounded out (e.g. is sounds like iz).

A note from Betsy
: Before children finish first grade, they should be able to read all of the Dolch sight words and the commonly used Dolch nouns. The lists represent frequency of use in books on different grade levels. The word, if, is on the third grade list. This only means that E. W. Dolch found this word frequently in third grade books. He did not find it often in pre-primer through second grade books. The nouns aren't listed by grade level.

Choose Book 1 (see note from Betsy above), Book 2 (see note from Betsy above) or Book 3 (see note from Betsy above)

A Lucky PairA Lucky Pair - Frances Dinkins Strong This is a moving story that is PERFECT for students who a) love horses, or b) have compassion for the physically challenged or c) feel "different" or d) are learning how to read chapter books. The plot is interesting and it is the kind of book that a youngster would WANT to read. The story goes from page to page drawing the reader into relationship with each of the characters. The chapters are long enough to give the reader a sense of accomplishment from reading "chapter books" but short enough to make them want to read the next chapter! PS The artwork is delightful and hand drawn by Mattie Dinkins Roscoe.
